Need a break and think of heading to the Adirondacks in New York?. Friends told me that Lake Placid is a great place to do some cycling and hiking. I did some quick research and Whiteface Lodge was consistently listed as one of the top hotels in the Adirondacks. I double checked with TripAdvisor and it was listed as the #2 hotel in the Lake Placid area. So I thought I should give it a try. It’s more expensive than a typical hotel room, but the rooms are more like suites. Prices usually start in the high $200s for a Junior One Bedroom Suite, up go up to close to $900 for the Grand Lodge three bedroom suite. We went mid week in May, so we got a bit of a deal, we reserved a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite for about $300 / night.
We loved our stay at the Lodge. The hotel is extremely well run and has all the amenities needed for a great couples weekend, or family vacation.
Whiteface Lodge Pool Area
The Lodge has both an indoor and outdoor heated pool. The indoor pool is connected to the outdoor pool via a swimming tunnel you can use in winter when you want to start indoors and then venture to the outdoor pool. We used the outdoor pool which was heated to a very pleasant temperature for May. Outdoors there are also two great hot tubs, one large and one a bit smaller. They both produce powerful jets and awesome bubbles for a very relaxing experience.
Whiteface Lodge Spa
On Wednesday night we received a note saying all spa activities would be 25% off the next day, so we decided to sign up for the Deep Tissue Message. This is a 50 minute message and it was very relaxing (accompanied by music and your choice of scented oils). The message is usually $135, we got 25% off, but what we didn’t know is that they automatically add an 18% tip to the bill. We were a little disappointed we weren’t told in advance. The spa area also includes a great steam room and sauna in each of the change rooms, and these are included for free when you get a spa service.
Whiteface Lodge Restaurants
We ate at the Kanu Lounge by the bar the first night. Pizza and beer were on the menu. The Margherita Pizza was made in a wood burning oven was good. Breakfast was included in our rate and was served every morning in the Kanu Dining Room. Breakfast is a good quality buffet including steel cut oatmeal (which is our favorite), eggs, sausage, pancakes, french toast, potatoes and a variety of toast and breads. Orange juice and coffee are also included.
Cycling near Lake Placid
We rented some bikes at High Peaks Cycling. Very friendly folks that are willing to set you up with the right bike and get you out for a great ride. They recommended we take the road around Mirror Lake to Northwood Road, which connect to highway 86 which then leads to River Road, a very picturesque road that winds its way along the West Branch Ausable river. This road takes you past the site of the Olympic ski jump and then eventually back into town. This is a beautiful 45 minute ride, that is at times challenging because of some short but steep hills.
Lake Placid Hiking
We decided to take the hike up Cascade Mountain. Cascade Mountain is recognized as having one of the best summit views in the Adirondacks, with about two-thirds of the High Peaks, Lake Placid, and even Lake Champlain in sight on clear days. Cascade Mountain Trail ascends 1,925 feet over 2.4 miles and is a medium difficult climb with some steeper sections of rock stairways to climb. The climb takes about an hour. Cascade Mountain Trail starts from Route 73, about halfway between Lake Placid and Keene. There are three small parking lots along the highway near the trail. We were there midweek so only one of the parking lots was full, but on a busy weekend I imagine it may be hard to get parking. There were a few patches of ice higher up on the trail in mid-May, but we easily negotiated our way around these.
Exploring Downtown Lake Placid
The main street is a great place to stroll with a lot of nice shops and restaurants. On our last day we decided to visit the Olympic Museum which is located next to the arena where the 1980 Winter Olympic “Miracle on Ice” hockey victory took place. The museum is not big but has a nice mix of exhibits and history of the 1932 and 1980 winter olympics held in Lake Placid.
Whiteface Lodge Hotel Floor Plan
There are no bad rooms in the lodge, but if you have a preference for direction have a look at the attached floor plan. Our room #121 had a nice patio and was facing North towards a small pond. East facing rooms face a forest of trees, and South and West are facing towards the pool & spa, and a small lake just east of the lodge. If you’re looking for a little exercise in the beautiful outdoors, take a short walk around the small lake behind the hotel.
Finally, don’t forget to grab a free shuttle ride from the Lodge into downtown Lake Placid if you want to do some shopping or go to a restaurant. The Lodge uses a pair of BMWs as their shuttle. We rode in a very luxurious BMW 7 series that had a seat massage feature in the back seats!
Have you been to Lake Placid and stayed somewhere else? We’d love to hear your feedback.
