Cheap Hotels – Comparing Hotel Prices of Trivago vs Hilton.com

With their famous “Trivago guy” commercials, most people are familiar with Trivago, the website that can be used to search for cheap hotels from different sources.  Trivago is owned by Expedia Group, which seems like a conflict of interest.  Trivago is supposed to be a independent hotel comparison tool, but most of the hotel booking sites listed on Trivago are also owned by Expedia Group (for instance Hotels.com, Expedia, Venere etc). But let’s put that aside and see how Trivago performs in terms of  find the best  hotel prices.

When you do a search on Trivago, it compares hotel booking site prices with the prices offered on the hotel chain websites, like hilton.com. I’ve recently been using Trivago to compare hotel pricing of Trivago vs Hilton.com.

In the “Trivago vs Hilton.com” cheap hotels comparison, Hilton has the best price in 7 cases, and Trivago derived booking sites are better in 5 cases. Note the prices quoted for Hilton are the HHonorsMember Rate, which can only be accessed if you sign up for the Hilton Honours member program.  The member rate only seems to be about $5  dollars less than the advance purchase rate. So in the “Trivago (booking sites) vs Hilton.com website” cheap hotels comparison it is close to a draw, with the Hilton website a slight winner.  In comparison with equivalent cheap hotels research for Marriott and Hyatt, it appears that Hilton is not being as aggressive as the other two major chains on its website.

If you are looking for cheap hotels, I would make sure you check the hotel website price before booking anything on your favourite booking site like Expedia or Booking.com.
