Ottawa has a number of great festivals every year like the Ottawa Jazz Festival (late June), Ottawa Bluesfest (in July), and Winterlude (in February). In addition, there is the big Canada Day party every July 1 where hundreds of thousands of people will gather in the area of Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada’s birthday. You’re dead tired so you head to your hotel room hoping to catch a good night’s sleep because you have an early morning meeting. You fall sound asleep and wake to the buzz of the alarm, sprint into the shower, and dress only to realize that it’s only 4:00 a.m., a couple of hours before your intended wake-up! The buzzer you heard was in the room next door.

One of the great benefits of being a member of the Disney Vacation Club is the ability to do pool hopping at Walt Disney World. Over the years Disney has reduced the ability to pool hop to some of the most popular resorts, but there are still lots of great pools out there to enjoy. As a DVC member, pool hopping allows you to use pools at other Disney Vacation Club resorts and some pools at Walt Disney World resorts.
When our family goes to Disney World we love to take advantage of the monorail transportation in the Magic Kingdom Resort area to do some pool hopping. We can stay at one of the Disney Resorts, like the Polynesian Resort, and then pool hop to some of the other great resorts on the monorail system. It’s so easy and so quick, and there are no car or parking hassles. The strategy of where to stay is important because of the limitations on pool hopping. Here is Disney’s current policy for pool hopping:
Pool hopping is not available at the following Disney pools:
- Bay Cove Pool at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
- Uzima Pool and Samawati Springs Pool at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
- Stormalong Bay at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resorts
- The leisure pool at Disney’s Beach Club Villas
- The Lava Pool and leisure pool at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
- The Copper Creek Springs Pool at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
- The pools at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
- Boulder Ridge Cove Pool at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
Disney’ monorail transportation stops at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and from the TTC you can transfer to another monorail to take you to Epcot.
So the best strategy for Magic Kingdom area pool hopping is to stay at one of the resorts that doesn’t allow pool hopping like the Disney’s Polynesian Resort or Bay Lake Towers, take advantage of the pool there, and then pool hop to some of the other pools which are allowed, like the Grand Floridian Resort pools. If you have a park hopper pass you can also take the monorail to Epcot and then walk through Epcot to the Epcot Resort area, and take advantage of pools like the Boardwalk Resort Lunar Park Pool. If you don’t have a park hopper pass you can always take the bus to the Epcot area resorts.
The Grand Floridian has two great pools, the Courtyard Pool and the Beach Pool.

Lodging eats up a lot of the travel budget when you’re planning a trip. So, like most people you try and choose wisely to get a cheap hotel, an amazing hotel or hopefully both. But where do you turn to for advice? There are the old-fashioned, solidly-researched travel guidebooks, in addition to a plethora of online material that’s enough to spin your head. It’s tough to sift through all that information. And is it really reliable? Many people these days turn to the relative ease of reading short travel reviews readily available through sites, such as Yelp and TripAdvisor. Others scroll through the reviews posted on booking sites, such as Expedia, Priceline, Travelocity, Orbitz, Trivago, and HomeAway to mention just a few.
